House Bill 8948, principally authored by Rep. Roger Mercado (Lone District, Southern Leyte), intends to pay tribute to the individuals who lost their lives in 2006, when a landslide took place in Barangay Guinsaugon in the Municipality of St. Bernard, Southern Leyte.
Mercado said that 1,126 died when the tragedy happened.
He sought the enactment into law of his bill to also raise the issue on neglecting the environment, which caused the death of these individuals.
“The passage of this bill will serve as a reminder not only to the residents living in St. Bernard, Southern Leyte but for the whole nation that we need to take care of our environment to avoid another ill-fated catastrophe. The remaining survivors of this tragedy surely will remember the most painful day that happened in their lives,” Mercado said.
The bill was transmitted to the Senate after the House approved it on third and final reading prior to the adjournment.
The bill is co-authored by Reps. Marlyn Primicias-Agabas (6th District, Pangasinan), Jose Antonio Sy-Alvarado (1st District, Bulacan) and John Marvin "Yul Servo" Nieto (3rd District, Manila)./ Molie Gonzales, News and Documentation Section-Press and Public Affairs Bureau/ House of Representatives of the Philippines.
