Judge Datuk Halijah Abbas handed down the sentence on Shrestha Sujan, 19, after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubts against the prosecution case at the end of the defence case.
He was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest on June 4, 2016.
Shrestha was charged with causing the death of Hom Bahadur Magar, in his 30s, during a fight at a quarters for workers at Poh Keong Industri Sdn Bhd, Batu 7, Bakri here between 11 pm and 11.50 pm on June 4, 2016.
He was charged under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code for causing death by negligence, which provides an imprisonment for up to 30 years, and is liable to fine, upon conviction.
Shrestha was initially charged with murder, under Section 302 of the same law, which provides the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Rasyidah Murni Adzmi, while Shrestha was represented by lawyer Kharen Jit Kaur.
